I’ve been watching bits of the Winter Olympics this week, and the ice skating has brought back a flood of memories.
Out of nowhere, it made me think about growing up in San Diego county, and all those weekend ice skating lessons I took as a kid. Early mornings, freezing cold rinks, going round and round the ice while other kids were probably at home watching cartoons.
At the time, it was just normal. I never thought much about it.
But watching the skaters now, it really hit me how much work goes into something that looks so smooth and effortless for just a few minutes on the ice.
Which is exactly how branding and photography work too.
When we see a great photo or a brand that feels really confident and clear, it can look like it just happened. Like they nailed it straight away.
What we don’t see is the practice, the experimenting, or the awkward stages.
The “this doesn’t quite feel right yet” moments.
Strong branding isn’t about one perfect photo or one perfect post.
It’s about showing up consistently, refining how you tell your story, and getting more comfortable being visible over time.
Confidence doesn’t come first. Practice does.
So if your brand or photos feel a bit confused right now, that doesn’t mean you’re behind. It just means you’re in the middle of building something.
Learning what works, what doesn’t, and what actually feels like you.
And that part matters more than people realise.
